Waste Management, Inc. (WM), incorporated on April 28, 1995, is a holding company. The Company, through its subsidiaries, is a provider of waste management environmental services. The Company's segments include Solid Waste and Other. The Company's Solid Waste segment includes its solid waste business. The Other segment includes its Strategic Business Solutions (WMSBS) organization; its landfill gas-to-energy operations and third-party subcontract and administration services managed by its Energy and Environmental Services and WM Renewable Energy organizations; its recycling brokerage services, and its service offerings and solutions, such as portable self-storage and long distance moving services, fluorescent lamp recycling and interests it holds in oil and gas producing properties.

The Company collaborates with its residential, commercial, industrial and municipal customers and the communities it serves to manage and reduce waste at each stage from collection to disposal. The Company recovers valuable resources and creates renewable energy. The Company's Solid Waste business is operated and managed locally by its subsidiaries that focus on distinct geographic areas and provides collection, transfer, disposal, and recycling and resource recovery services. Through its subsidiaries, the Company develops, operates and owns landfill gas-to-energy facilities in the United States.

As of December 31, 2016, the Company owned or operated 243 solid waste landfills and five secure hazardous waste landfills. The Company uses waste to create energy, recovering the gas produced naturally, as waste decomposes in landfills and using the gas in generators to make electricity. The Company handles materials that include paper, cardboard, glass, plastic and metal. The Company provides recycling programs for municipalities, businesses and households across the United States and Canada, as well as other services that supplement its Traditional Solid Waste business. As of December 31, 2016, the Company owned or operated 310 transfer stations in North America. The Company deposits waste at these stations. As of December 31, 2016, it operated 95 material recovery facilities (MRFs) where paper, cardboard, metals, plastics, glass, construction and demolition materials and other recyclable commodities were recovered for resale. The Company markets and resells recyclable commodities globally. It also provides recycling brokerage services, which involve managing the marketing of recyclable materials for third parties.

The Company's Energy and Environmental Services organization offers its customers a range of services in collaboration, including construction and remediation services; services associated with the disposal of fly ash, residue generated from the combustion of coal and other fuel stocks; in-plant services, and specialized disposal services for oil and gas exploration and production operations. The Company develops, operates and promotes projects for the beneficial use of landfill gas through its WM Renewable Energy organization. As of December 31, 2016, the Company had 131 landfill gas beneficial use projects producing commercial quantities of methane gas at owned or operated landfills.
