NiSource Inc NI

NiSource Inc., incorporated on March 29, 2000, is an energy holding company. The Company is engaged in the distribution of natural gas. The Company operates through two business segments: Gas Distribution Operations and Electric Operations. The Gas Distribution Operations segment provides natural gas service and transportation for residential, commercial and industrial customers in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Kentucky, Maryland, Indiana and Massachusetts. As of December 31, 2016, the Electric Operations segment provided electric services in 20 counties in the northern part of Indiana. The Company's principal subsidiaries include NiSource Gas Distribution Group, Inc., which is a natural gas distribution holding company, and NIPSCO, which is a gas and electric company. NiSource Finance Corporation (NiSource Finance) is a consolidated finance subsidiary of the Company. NiSource Finance is engaged in financing activities to raise funds for the business operations of the Company and its subsidiaries.

Gas Distribution Operations

The Gas Distribution Operations segment operated approximately 59,000 miles of pipeline, as of December 31, 2016. As of December 31, 2016, the Company, through its subsidiary, NiSource Gas Distribution Group, Inc., owned six distribution subsidiaries that provided natural gas to residential, commercial and industrial customers in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Kentucky, Maryland and Massachusetts. In addition, the Company also distributes natural gas to customers in northern Indiana through its subsidiary, NIPSCO.

Electric Operations

The Company's electric operations segment generated, transmitted and distributed electricity through its subsidiary NIPSCO to approximately 466,000 customers in 20 counties in the northern part of Indiana and engaged in wholesale and transmission transactions, as of December 31, 2016. NIPSCO owned and operated three coal-fired electric generating stations, as of December 31, 2016. The three operating facilities had a net capability of 2,540 megawatts, as of December 31, 2016. NIPSCO also owned and operated Sugar Creek, a CCGT plant with net capability of 535 megawatts, three gas-fired generating units located at NIPSCO's coal-fired electric generating stations with a net capability of 196 megawatts and two hydroelectric generating plants with a net capability of 10 megawatts, as of December 31, 2016. As of December 31, 2016, these facilities provided for a total system operating net capability of 3,281 megawatts. NIPSCO's transmission system, with voltages from 69,000 to 345,000 volts, consisted of 2,805 circuit miles, as of December 31, 2016. NIPSCO is interconnected with five neighboring electric utilities, as of December 31, 2016. NIPSCO participates in the midcontinent independent system operator (MISO) transmission service and wholesale energy market.
