About Consolidated Edison, Inc.
Consolidated Edison, Inc. (Con Edison), incorporated on September 3, 1997, is a holding company. The Company operates through its subsidiaries, which include Consolidated Edison Company of New York, Inc. (CECONY), Orange and Rockland Utilities, Inc. (O&R), Con Edison Clean Energy Businesses, Inc. (the Clean Energy Businesses) and Con Edison Transmission, Inc. (Con Edison Transmission). CECONY's principal business operations are its regulated electric, gas and steam delivery businesses. O&R's principal business operations are its regulated electric and gas delivery businesses. The Clean Energy Businesses develop, own and operate renewable and energy infrastructure projects and provide energy-related products and services to wholesale and retail customers. Con Edison Transmission, through its subsidiaries, invests in electric and gas transmission projects.
CECONY provides electricity, natural gas and steam to customers in New York City and Westchester County. As of December 31, 2016, CECONY provided electric service to approximately 3.4 million customers in all of New York City (except part of Queens) and Westchester County an approximately 660 square mile service area. As of December 31, 2016, CECONY delivered gas to approximately 1.1 million customers in Manhattan, the Bronx, parts of Queens and Westchester County. As of December 31, 2016, CECONY operated the steam distribution system in the United States by producing and delivering approximately 19,979 million pounds (MMlb) of steam annually to approximately 1,649 customers in parts of Manhattan. As of December 31, 2016, CECONY owned 62 area distribution substations and various distribution facilities located throughout New York City and Westchester County. As of December 31, 2016, the company's distribution system had a transformer capacity of 30,122 megavolt ampere (MVA), with 36,900 miles of overhead distribution lines and 97,288 miles of underground distribution lines.
The Company's transmission facilities are located in New York City and Westchester, Orange, Rockland, Putnam and Dutchess counties in New York State. CECONY's electric generating facilities consist of plants located in Manhattan. As of December 31, 2016, the facilities had an aggregate capacity of 726 megawatt (MW). As of December 31, 2016, CECONY generated steam at one steam-electric generating station and five steam-only generating stations and distributed steam to its customers through approximately 104 miles of transmission, distribution and service piping. O&R together with its subsidiary, Rockland Electric Company (RECO), delivers electricity and natural gas to customers primarily located in southeastern New York State and northern New Jersey. As of December 31, 2016, O&R provided electric service to approximately 0.3 million customers in southeastern New York and northern New Jersey, an approximately 1,300 square mile service area. As of December 31, 2016, O&R delivered gas to over 0.1 million customers in southeastern New York. As of December 31, 2016, O&R and RECO owned, in whole or in part, transmission and distribution facilities, including 532 circuit miles of transmission lines, 15 transmission substations, 62 distribution substations, 85,514 in-service line transformers, 3,913 pole miles of overhead distribution lines and 1,764 miles of underground distribution lines.
As of December 31, 2016, natural gas is delivered by pipeline to O&R at various points in or near its service territory and is distributed to customers by the Company through an estimated 1,865 miles of mains and 104,748 service lines. Clean Energy Businesses operate through three subsidiaries: Consolidated Edison Development, Inc. (Con Edison Development), which develops, owns and operates renewable and energy infrastructure projects; Consolidated Edison Energy, Inc. (Con Edison Energy), a company which provides energy-related products and services to wholesale customers, and Consolidated Edison Solutions, Inc. (Con Edison Solutions), which provides energy-related products and services to retail customers. As of December 31, 2016, Con Edison Energy provided services to manage the dispatch, fuel requirements and risk management activities for 4,014 MW of generating plants and merchant transmission in the northeastern United States.
The Company also provides wholesale hedging and risk management services to renewable electric production projects owned by Con Edison Development and Con Edison Solutions. Con Edison Development develops, owns and operates renewable and energy infrastructure projects. Con Edison Solutions provides energy-efficiency services to government and commercial customers. The services include the design and installation of lighting retrofits, heating, ventilating and air conditioning equipment and other energy saving technologies. Con Edison Transmission invests in electric transmission facilities through its subsidiary, Consolidated Edison Transmission, LLC (CET Electric), and invests in gas pipeline and storage facilities through its subsidiary, Con Edison Gas Pipeline and Storage, LLC (CET Gas). CET Electric invests in a company that owns electric transmission assets in New York. CET Gas owns, operates and develops an existing gas pipeline and storage business located in northern Pennsylvania and southern New York.
