FirstEnergy Corp., incorporated on September 17, 1996, is a holding company. The Company is engaged in holding, directly or indirectly, all of the outstanding equity of its principal subsidiaries, which include Ohio Edison Company (OE), The Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company (CEI), The Toledo Edison Company (TE), Pennsylvania Power Company (Penn), Jersey Central Power & Light Company (JCP&L), Metropolitan Edison Company (ME), Pennsylvania Electric Company (PN), FirstEnergy Service Company (FESC), FirstEnergy Solutions Corp. (FES) and its principal subsidiaries (FirstEnergy Generation, LLC (FG) and FirstEnergy Nuclear Generation, LLC (NG)), Allegheny Energy Supply Company, LLC (AE Supply), Monongahela Power Company (MP), The Potomac Edison Company (PE), West Penn Power Company (WP), FirstEnergy Transmission, LLC (FET) and its principal subsidiaries (American Transmission Systems, Incorporated (ATSI) and Trans-Allegheny Interstate Line Company (TrAIL)), and Allegheny Energy Service Corporation (AESC). The Company's segments include Regulated Distribution, Regulated Transmission, Competitive Energy Services (CES) and Corporate/Other.
The Company and its subsidiaries are involved in the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity. As of December 31, 2016, its generation subsidiaries controlled 17,000 megawatts of capacity from a mix of non-emitting nuclear, scrubbed coal, natural gas, hydroelectric and other renewables. As of December 31, 2016, its transmission operations included 24,000 miles of lines and two regional transmission operation centers.
Regulated Distribution
As of December 31, 2016, the Regulated Distribution segment distributed electricity through the Company's 10 utility operating companies, serving approximately six million customers within 65,000 square miles of Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey and New York, and purchased power for its provider of last resort (POLR), standard offer service (SOS), standard offer service (SSO) and default service requirements in Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Maryland. As of December 31, 2016, the segment also controlled 3,790 megawatts of regulated electric generation capacity located primarily in West Virginia, Virginia and New Jersey.
Regulated Transmission
The Regulated Transmission segment transmits electricity through transmission facilities owned and operated by ATSI and TrAIL, and certain of the Company's utilities (JCP&L, ME, PN, MP, PE and WP). This segment also includes the regulatory asset associated with the abandoned Potomac-Appalachian Transmission Highline, LLC (PATH) project. The segment's revenues are primarily derived from forward-looking rates at ATSI and TrAIL, as well as stated transmission rates at certain of the Company's utilities.
CES segment
The CES segment, through FES and AE Supply, primarily supplies electricity to end use customers through retail and wholesale arrangements, including competitive retail sales to customers primarily in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Michigan, New Jersey and Maryland, and the provision of partial POLR and default service for some utilities in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Maryland, including OE, CEI, TE, Penn, JCP&L, ME, PN, MP, PE and WP (the Utilities). As of December 31, 2016, this business segment controlled 13,162 megawatts of electric generating capacity.
