WH Smith is one of the UK high street’s oldest names with roots dating back to 1792. Until recently the company was split into two main operations: retail and news distribution. In 2006, after a series of disposals that saw publishing house Hodder Headline sold, the company demerged its distribution arm to leave it focused purely on retail. WH Smith's strategy in maximising dividend returns for its shareholders is aiming to monopolise the market in overtaking multiple locations in the travel sector and on the high street.

WH Smith Plc have announced a proposed final dividend of 22.6p per share
The WH Smith Plc Board has proposed a final dividend of 22.6p per share in respect of the financial year ended 31 August 2024, which together with the interim dividend, gives a full year dividend of 33.6p per share. This reflects the cash generative nature of the business and their confidence in the future prospects of the Group. Subject to shareholder approval, the dividend will be paid on 6 February 2025 to shareholders registered at the close of business on 17 January 2025.
WH Smith announce an Interim dividend of 11.0p per share
The WH Smith directors have declared an interim dividend in respect of the period ending 29 February 2024 of 11.0p per ordinary share. This will be paid on 1 August 2024 to shareholders registered at the close of business on 12 July 2024.
WH Smith Plc propose final dividend of 20.8p per share
The WH Smith Plc Board has proposed a final dividend of 20.8p per share in respect of the financial year ended 31 August 2023, which together with the interim dividend, gives a full-year dividend of 28.9p per share. This reflects the cash-generative nature of their business and their confidence in the future prospects of their group. Subject to shareholder approval, the dividend will be paid on 1 February 2024 to shareholders registered at the close of business on 12 January 2024.

The Board has declared an interim dividend of 8.1p per share. This reflects their strong start to the year, the cash generative nature of the business and their confidence in the future prospects of the business. Their intention is to return, in time, to a cover ratio of around 2.5 times earnings, paid on an interim and final basis on a 1/3:2/3 split. The dividend will be paid on 3 August 2023.

The Board has proposed a final dividend of 41.0p per share, an increase of 8% on the prior year, giving a total ordinary dividend per share of 58.2p, an 8% increase on the prior year.
